Resource Efficiency Module (REM)

The Resource Efficiency Module (REM) supports the textile, apparel, leather and footwear industry to reduce its negative environmental impacts and in particular around GHG emissions.

In addressing the climate change emergency, companies in the industry need help to identify and report on their GHG emissions performance. They also need guidance to take the right GHG reduction measures.

Suppliers in particular face two major challenges:

  • The necessary tools, resources and expertise are not available
  • The business case for environmental improvement measures is often unclear

The REM offers a unique tool to address these challenges

It bridges the gap in existing industry initiatives, which are primarily focused on reporting. It provides Suppliers with:

  • Cost-effective recommendations for action on resource efficiency
  • Support in calculating their GHG emissions

How the REM works

The REM is designed as a user-friendly, collaborative tool. It provides insightful analyses on GHG emissions that enable Suppliers to see where changes are needed and how they can get started.

Self-evaluation

The REM analyses a Supplier's environmental performance to identify improvement opportunities. This helps with implementing resource efficiency measures in production facilities. Suppliers can find ways to reduce energy, water and chemicals usage, guidance is provided on how to implement reduction measures.

Automatic GHG calculations

Suppliers can record their resource consumption. The REM looks at electrical and thermal energy (Suppliers' scope 1 and 2) and other categories such as purchased goods and services, waste, or transportation (Suppliers' scope 3). Consumption data is entered into the REM, which automatically calculates GHG emissions by combining consumption data and the emission factor.

Recommendations and indications

Clear recommendations and explanations show how changes can be implemented at facility level. Suppliers also get an average indication of the costs and effort involved, as well as pay-back timelines.

The REM empowers Suppliers to analyse their environmental performance and improve production processes via resource reduction measures. It helps to measure GHG emissions for their scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. This data can be used to assess performance and report to brands.Being able to record consumption and use resources more efficiently reduces negative environmental impacts. It also helps to cut operating costs.

Brands can invite Suppliers at all levels to use the REM, encouraging them to engage in GHG measurement and systematically implement resource efficiency measures. This objective supply chain data can also be used by Brands to set and monitor their own GHG reduction targets.
